Exchange programmes » A personal account by Cédric Thomas

A personal account by Cédric Thomas

/ Young leader of Emmaus Périgueux community, Cédric Thomas spent a week in Germany.

« As part of my “young leader” training and of the exchange programme between European groups, I had the chance to travel to Germany to visit the Cologne community from 17th – 22nd November 2008.

During my short stay, I also spent a day with the Krefeld community.

Apart from simply meeting people – companions, leaders, friends and donors – what really struck me was the “community project” at work in a different social, political and economic context.

The obvious and not-so-obvious differences were opportunities for me to think about and challenge the practices and experience of my home community.

Moreover, the three German communities understand the importance of Emmaus Europe and believe it will have a key role in the future.

I am returning to Périgueux with information and partnership ideas which may well change the view we have of each other and generate joint projects.

In my view, this type of stay is just the first step.

Other exchanges would involve companions and friends with a view to developing, boosting and consolidating Emmaus Europe. »
