Here is an extract of his feelings:
« The car park.We changed cars as our car’s engine unfortunately failed. There were five of us travelling to Romania – Rachel, a lad from Planay, Rémi, a lad from Scherwiller, a lad from Savoy and I.
The airport . We were scheduled to take the 12.06pm flight. Our bags were left behind and came on the 4.36pm flight. We arrived at the airport over there at 2.15pm and rented a hire car. The car itself was fine but the journey was far from kind on the backside. We drove all night and all the next day. It rained, we felt ill, we were hot and then we were cold. We travelled along tarmac roads with two lanes but the roads signs and markings were complicated. At night it was dangerous as there were lorries parked up on the verges with their lights turned off. I asked about it and was told that there are lots of accidents and deaths on the roads.
Arrival . Iasi boasts a magnificent 19th century railway station with historic monument status. There were adverts everywhere for cigarettes and alcohol but there were no billboards with good looking girls.
Emmaus Community, Iasi. The community is large and housed in a lovely building, with old walls, which also has historic monument status. There are 36 male and female companions but no children. As soon as a woman has a child, the child is placed with a foster family, which shocked me. Further up there is another house that they have had for a short while and that they are in the process of restoring. The group has two leaders who manage work in the house and the shop. The leaders met and decided to create the community. The community is made up of very young people with the oldest companion being 26. While I was there, a young girl of 16 arrived. She had nowhere else to go. In Romania, apparently, many young girls have to turn to prostitution to survive.
There was a companion who spoke French and interpreted for us. We were able to interact with the Romanian companions using gestures and a few words. It’s fair to say that communication wasn’t easy. Some of the companions would like to come to France and I would be happy to visit Iasi again. »
