ITALY – Solidarity work camps

Campi Emmaus 2019

The Association Emmaus Italy aims to coordinate and support the initiatives of the 16 Italian groups that refer to the international movement founded by Abbé Pierre, as well as to open new communities and groups of friends in Italy.

The work camps born in the Sixties give the opportunity for those who wish to live a temporarily experience with Emmaus. Work camps are organized on the model of Emmaus community (hosting, community life, work, service, fight) and are usually scheduled during the summer holidays.

Emmaus Catania – Ecology and sharing

  • Venue

Catania, Italy

  • Dates

14/07 – 25/08 – one week and two weeks turns: 14-28/07 // 28/07–04/08 // 4-11/08 // 11-25/08

  • Description

For the first time, Emmaus Italia will test the volunteer summer camps in Catania, directly managing a volunteer camp in the city.

In collaboration with associations and social organizations of the area, Emmaus Italia will set up a large solidarity second-hand market in the city. The aim is to finance further solidarity at the local and national level and to understand if in the city of Catania it is possible to integrate a circular economic circuit, that can support a hosting community for people in difficulty.

The sober community lifestyle, based on caring about the other and sharing characterizes the Emmaus communities worldwide.

The goods donated by the other Italian Emmaus communities and by the citizens of Catania will be sold at the second-hand market (furniture, objects, clothes, paintings, household items, crockery, appliances, bicycles, books, comics, vintage in general, etc.).

The volunteers of the camp will mainly carry out activities related to the second-hand market: leafleting, loading / unloading, selection and arrangement of used goods, disposal of unsuitable goods, sale and relationship with donors and customers.

Within each turn volunteers will be trained on the practices and the philosophy of the Emmaus Movement, which was founded by the Abbé Pierre in Paris in 1949. There will be opportunities to focus on the issues dear to Emmaus: circular economy, community life, fight against misery, mafias and corruption, free movement of human beings.

Volunteers will be protagonists in actions of social animation in one of the suburbs of the city together with associations of the area and they will help in organizing cultural and awareness rising moments. In addition, they will take turns helping to cook and clean.

Accommodation is provided in schools or in local partner facilities.

The detailed program will be sent by e-mail within 15 days from the beginning of your own turn.
