Since the 2009 Regional Assembly, Emmaus Europe has marked its presence and positioned itself as a key player on the European public stage, particularly for the issues of combating the root causes of poverty, the solidarity economy, immigration and asylum.
The European Union wants to change Member States’ national asylum provisions and has declared 2010 to be the European Year for Combating Poverty.
We decided to step up our political lobbying in order to make the movement’s views heard on these two issues. Consequently, having analysed the proposals for a recast of the asylum package, we met with several MEPs who are involved in this area and who are willing to pass on our concerns and recommendations.
The report firstly aims to inform you about our lobbying but also and above all aims to enable you to get to grips with European news, so that we can run a long-lasting large-scale campaign both locally and at European level. Voting on the last few asylum package proposals will come to an end in the next few months. It is therefore the right time to run a local campaign and raise the awareness of your MEPs about these issues.
You will see that many obstacles have been overcome when reading this first progress report on our lobbying work. However, there is still a long way to go. We will only be able to continue our lobbying with your support.
