Emmaus in Croatia
Emmaus now has 2 member groups in Croatia. One is based on the Adriatic Coast, in the south of the country, whereas the other is in the north-east. These groups also lead initiatives in the nearby regions, and sometimes even lead initiatives all throughout the country. Their work is focused on the integration of people with disabilities and on protecting their rights, as well as protecting children who have been victims of violence (mistreatment, sexual abuse, negligence, etc.), faced with indifference on the behalf of the Croatian authorities.Origins
The first Croatian group, CNZD (the Centre for Missing and Exploited Children), was created in 2006 when it became clear that vulnerable children were facing the risk of being exploited or sexually abused via the Internet. The CNZD noted how the authorities were indifferent to the plight of these children. The group’s objectives have gradually changed over time and they now focus on the protection of children in general. The group built up ties with the Emmaus movement thanks to a partnership with the IFS-Emmaus group in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 2018, CNZD officially joined the movement as a trial member, before becoming a full member in 2021. The second Croatian group, TOMS, was created in 1988 with the aim of promoting equal rights for people with disabilities. TOMS is one of the largest civil society organisations in Croatia and it covers all different types of disabilities with its initiatives that help to boost the integration of disabled persons in society. After spending 3 years as a trial member, TOMS became a full member of the Emmaus movement in 2021.Main Activities
