Close to 200 Emmaus representatives from across Europe met this autumn in Saint Sebastian and elected our movement’s first ever female president.

In Emmaus groups, we are familiar with migration journeys of companions who have come from afar, enduring violence and exploitation at different stages along the way. These journeys are sometimes within the European continent, particularly for young Romanians welcomed by @emmaussatumare who were in care as children 🏠

Thanks to its second-hand clothes and crockery sales, the association continues to distribute food and clothing to displaced people from Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

🚨 15 EU civil society organisations call for an ambitious and inclusive EU Anti-Poverty Strategy

Together with 14 organisations, we have addressed a joint letter to the new Executive Vice-President for People, Skills, and Preparedness, @roxana.minzatu

We welcome the new EVP and request a meeting to discuss the upcoming first-ever EU Anti-Poverty Strategy, announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

This is a pivotal moment for the EU to intensify efforts in the fight against poverty and work towards its eradication.

📢 As civil society organisations working on a wide range of fundamental rights, our diverse and complementary perspectives will be key to contribute to a comprehensive and intersectional EU Anti-Poverty Strategy, that aligns with other key EU policy frameworks.

The European textile sector is in CRISIS. For months, the second-hand sector has been overwhelmed, largely due to the massive influx of low-quality clothing from fast fashion. 😡

➡️ Consequences: textile sorting platforms are at a standstill, and unbearable pressure is being placed on social economy organizations like Emmaus.

🚨 THIS IS URGENT – WE MUST ACT!!

Emmaus Europe, alongside RREUSE, Zero Waste Europe, and a network of committed cities, is urging the European Commission to take action and implement:

• Strong measures against fast fashion
• Increased support for social economy actors
• A genuine circular economy model, not just a facade that allows overproduction to continue

This week, our board met in Srebrenica for an intense and emotional meeting!

The visit of the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial left a lasting impression on us and gave us a better understanding of the context in which IFS-Emmaus works. We also visited the center for the eldery, the medical center and the children’s center created by IFS-Emmaus to meet the needs of the local population; this was impressive 👏

After this productive meeting, we left with new projects to guide our solidarity work 🤗

🙏 Many thanks to @mfs_emmaus for their warm welcome. We will all remember this meeting and the solidarity at the heart of your action, at the heart of Emmaus 🕊️

We visited the great projects of Otaharin @otaharinbijeljina in Bosnia-Herzegovina for the 2 last days!
They are a pro Roma organisation who works with street children and Roma families for social integration and against discrimination.

🍅 🫑 They have a small economic activity growing vegetables and making the best organic Ajvar (a local delicious red pepper sauce) !

They have been a long time partner of our Emmaus group in Bosnia Herzegovina (IFS-Emmaus) and they may join the Emmaus movement as well!
